If you are looking to buy a home, that was built prior to 1950, the home may have a Knob and Tube Wiring System. Though the technology is older, it is still capable of carrying electricity throughout the house.
What is Knob and Tube Wiring?
It is a system that uses Porcelain Insulators called Knobs, for running wires through unobstructed spaces. These tubes protect wires that run through Studs and Joists in your Home. It was designed to let heat dissipate to the surrounding air.
Many Older Detached or Semi-Detached Homes in Toronto Neighbourhoods with Knob and Tube Wiring, may not have the electrical capacity to meet today's electrical needs (Ipods, WiFi, Appliances, TV's etc). Most Toronto Residential Real Estate Properties have a "Ground Wire" and 3-prong outlet that adds an extra measure of safety.
As the existing Knob and Tube wiring gets older, Insurance Companies may deny coverage due to the increased risk. Some Insurance Companies may not write new policies on homes unless they have assurance that a Qualified Electrician will upgrade the new wiring system within a specified time frame.
Have your Knob and Tube Wiring checked by a Qualified Electrician and / or by the Electrical Safety Authority.
